OceanStar: Revolutionizing Sustainable Aquaculture Through Smart Technology
When Hoang Chuong Dang and Minh Hoa Do partnered to establish OceanStar Technologies, it was with a clear goal in mind: to drive aquaculture towards an environmentally friendly, economically efficient, and sustainable future.
Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) require robust infrastructures and complex control systems to maintain their specific water parameters and environmental conditions. Water quality and biosecurity issues are often caught too late with current approaches to monitoring, leading to costly losses.
Enter OceanStar’s Smart Aquaculture Platform: an intelligent, proactive system built on the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors with machine learning algorithms that anticipates and prevents problems before they impact production.
Core Innovations
- Predictive Analytics Engine: Historical data patterns are monitored alongside real-time sensor readings to forecast water quality changes 24–48 hours in advance
- Automated Optimization: Biofilter performance, oxygenation, and water treatment parameters are continuously adjusted to maintain optimal conditions while minimizing energy consumption
- Early Disease Detection: Behavioural analysis algorithms monitor fish movement patterns and feeding behaviour to identify health issues before clinical symptoms appear
- Climate Adaptation: Weather forecasting integration allows the system to preadjust environmental controls in anticipation of external temperature fluctuations, reducing energy spikes and maintaining stable conditions
Environmental and Social Impact
Through consistent, automated monitoring and AI-driven optimization, OceanStar’s system reduces water usage, eliminates the need for water discharge, and helps aquaculture facilities save energy. Increased efficiency and the prevention of production losses means communities have access to a stable protein supply that comes from sustainable operations.
OceanStar has comprehensive training programs available to help traditional farmers transition to technology-enabled sustainable aquaculture, preserving industry expertise while advancing practices. They are also in active collaboration with Indigenous communities to develop culturally appropriate aquaculture solutions that respect traditional practices while leveraging modern technology for economic empowerment.
Next Steps
OceanStar has successfully constructed their first prototype and started small-scale testing. Moving forward, they plan to deploy pilot systems in real aquaculture environments, collect performance data and user feedback to refine the system, and scale manufacturing capabilities for commercial deployment.
Many more milestones await OceanStar—we encourage you to connect with them and follow their journey.
